TOUCH SCREEN WITHOUT THE SCREEN posted by James Dennington

Touchscreens rule our lives.  When Nintendo introduced their dual-screen DS in 2004, Apple realized the huge potential of the product and quickly developed what would become the iPhone and iPod Touch.  Almost every new car sold today comes with some sort of touch navigation in the center console, cementing our society's love of the touch screen.

But what if any surface could be a touch screen?  What if we could project a portable touch screen onto any surface, in any environment?

This type of technology astounds me.  We don't even need screens anymore to have touch screens.  Just touch.  Using this technology in places where a typical screen would get filthy or unusable quickly would allow workers to stay organized and efficient despite the conditions.  It just blows my mind.

  1. I just heard about this wine bar that has an interactive touch screen on the table. It is the menu of all the wines they have and you can pick which wine you want and it sends to the bartender, basically eliminating a waiter/waitress if you are at a table away from the bar. I have been a waitress for 7 years and I think this technology could do wonders in the restaurant business. It would make the dinning experience quicker and more efficient. But then again there would be no personal connection with the guests which is a very important aspect of a servers role. And come to think of it I would be out of a job.
Here's a link to a video of it on youtube:

That video you posted was really cool and i enjoyed it. Technology is awesome. I can't wait to see these come out commercially although they would definitely need to refine the projector riding on the shoulder. I don't think many people would want that.

  2. Even though this would make it easier for workers to stay organized, I don't think that people will want to walk around with some that big on their shoulder. The users are going to want it to be fashionable or at least want a way for it to be hidden. Also, it could be inconvenient to walk around with something that big on your shoulder. You could bump into something and easily damage it. I feel like tablets are more convenient right now because they can do everything the omni-screen can do, but be put away when it is not in use.
However, I agree with Sarah, it would definitely work well for the restaurant businesses because it would make their work much more efficient.
I think this product would do better on the bigger scale of things, like restaurants, then the individuals in the workplace.

  3. I completely agree with Nicole on this one. This is an AMAZING idea but for a normal everyday use its a bit much. Technological advances have gone hand in hand with size/shape. Everyone likes things better when they are smaller because it is less of a hassle and more "impressive". So the touchscreen device is genius but it definitely needs to be modified in order to work for the majority of people outside of the workplace.

  4. What if there was the ability to project this from a smaller device? i.e. project a keyboard from an iPad? This could reduce the size of laptops by a significant amount. I would be for this technology if they could make it smaller.
